A tourist was left panicking and praying her plane wouldn’t crash after staff gave passengers candles just before turbulence hit.
Jula Vadini, from Poland, was traveling on a 50-minute flight from Bogota to San José Del Guaviare, Colombia, on Saturday, December 17, when a flight attendant woke her up and gave her a small, white, electronic candle.
The staff member gave no explanation to Vadin or others on the plane, simply walking around and handing out candles to all the passengers on board.
“I was very confused,” Vadini, 27, said in a recent TikTok video documenting the flight.
The Polish digital content creator, who lives in the UK, started jokingly filming the candle for a TikTok video.
“Are we dying?” she asked in the video, which has amassed over 22,000 views.
But things took a turn for the worst when turbulence hit.
“The seat belt sign continued and the pilot started giving safety instructions in Spanish,” Vadini told news.com.au.
Unable to translate the instructions, the 27-year-old solo traveler began to “panick” that the plane was going down and began “overanalyzing all the noises”.
“I thought the candle was given to us for good luck and to pray as we would probably crash.”
“I started please!”
Eventually, the plane managed to touch down safely at San José Del Guaviare, despite a bumpy landing.
It was only after Vadini posted the video on TikTok that she discovered the true meaning behind the candle.
“I later realized I was the only one on the flight who didn’t know about this candle tradition that happens on December 7,” she told news.com.au.
“The candle was not for us to pray before the fall, but for us to make a wish. Of course, I was completely unaware of this.”
In Colombia, December 7 marks the Day of the Little Candles or the Eve of the Immaculate Conception – a widely held religious holiday commemorating the immaculate conception of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary the following day.
During the night of December 7, colorful lanterns and candles are lit and placed on streets and outside homes to represent a wish for the well-being of loved ones.
“(It) turns out that this is a Colombian tradition on December 7,” Vadini shared with her followers on Instagram.
“A candle = a wish! How healthy.”
